Democrats Control House, Await Senate Results
from WDIV Detroit TV 4
The Senate was still up for grabs Wednesday morning after Democrats wrested 28 House seats from Republican control in a historic midterm election. Two Senate races remained outstanding Wednesday morning in Virginia and Montana. Democrats need to win both those states to take a Senate majority.
Republicans and Democrats have dispatched lawyers to Virginia, where votes from four precincts and uncounted absentee ballots from the Senate race will be counted Wednesday day.
Also, or the first time in 12 years, Democrats have a majority of the nation's governorships.
They've won the races in Massachusetts, Ohio, New York, Arkansas, Colorado and Maryland, reversing the GOP's six-seat advantage and giving them an edge in places considered vital to the 2008 presidential race. Democrats also held onto vulnerable seats in Iowa, Michigan, Oregon and Wisconsin. In Massachusetts, Deval Patrick will be the first black governor of his state and just the second elected black governor of any state.
The Republican winners include California's Arnold Schwarzenegger. There will be nine women as governors, including Republican Sarah Palin in Alaska.
