Harriet Miers Update
A Republican senator from Alabama said that Harriet Miers would have to overcome the "Souter factor" in order to be confirmed. Conservatives are worried that Miers may appear conservative, but once she sits on the bench she will vote more moderately (ie like Souter).
I believe that all this Republican complaining is a ploy to get her confirmed. This lady is supposed to be close to the President. Bush would never appoint her unless he knew her views on areas like abortion and gay marriage. Miers has never been verbal about her views on either subject. She has voted both ways for gay civil rights, but has never expressed how she feels about gay marriage.
I am not all that worried about abortion. I don't think that Roe v Wade will ever be overturned. The major issue that concerns me is gay marriage and civil rights. This is the decision that the high court will have to make in the next ten years. Sure the states will battle with it for a while. Some, including MI, have already made their decision by creating state constitutional amendments banning same sex marriages and unions. As a citizen of MI, our only hope is the Supreme Court of the US. Sure there are probably much more conservative choices that would be much worse, but Bush needs to be a lame duck. I don't want him to get anything done. I would rather have things stand still than have him running things.
